Democrats Question "Patriotism" of Auto Bailout Opponents
Remember how the Democrats spent the entire Bush presidency propagating the myth that Republicans labeled anti-war politicians as unpatriotic? Of course, I have yet to see a single instance of President Bush or other high-level Republicans ever saying that. But due to a relentless propaganda campaign by the Left, the myth took hold as reality.
But now, the Democrats are doing the same exact thing about which they have been expressing faux-outrage. After the failure of the auto/UAW bailout bill in the senate on Thursday, the Democrats unleashed a barrage of severe labels against the principled, economically-versed opponents of the bailout.
First, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, who has dragged her state into the anti-competitive, economically depressed mess that it is today (via fmpolitics):
"It is unacceptable for this un-American, frankly, behavior of these U.S. senators to cause this country to go from a recession into a depression," Granholm said during a radio interview Friday morning.
Then, Michigan Representative John Dingell:
“Last night, some Southern Senators kicked American workers in the gut,” Dingell said in a statement released by his office. “Let’s be clear about what happened in the Senate: Senators from states where the international automakers do considerable business unpatriotically blocked a bill that was supported by the White House, that passed the House with a bipartisan majority, and that had the support of 52 Senators.”
Let's not forget that Dingell has taken in around a million dollars from the auto industry, that his wife used to be a lobbyist for GM and went on to become one of its senior executives, that he has GM stock worth up to $350,000, and that he has options worth up to $1 million. Who's the one screwing the country for his own gain again?
And the chorus wouldn't be complete without UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, who said the following about the senators who refused to pay the costs that unions have forced upon themselves:
"They thought perhaps they could have a twofer here maybe: Pierce the heart of organized labor while representing the foreign brands."
Wow, so these senators aren't only unpatriotic, but also traitors?
What would the Democrats and the media have done had a top Republican leader actually called Democratic opponents "un-American" and "unpatriotic" for disagreeing with them on legislation? They would have raised hell, the Republican would have apologized, and we would have never heard the end of it.
But now the Democrats are doing it, and not even on national security legislation, but on legislation involving paying off their political contributors who have run their industry into the ground. They are even engaging in worse "divisive politics" than they have whined about in recent years, by returning to the old game of North versus South and by demonizing "some southern senators" with their "international automakers." Incredible, the nerve. And, predictably, the media is nowhere to be seen.

Worst part - this comes as no surprise...
I always knew the Democrats were out of touch with reality. Harry Reid even went so far as to predict that the Dow Jones would crash as a result of this failed bailout.
Whaddya know? The Dow rose!
